New France Audio Series (Rent)
New France, 1660: follow two families, one settler and one Indigenous, over twenty years as they love, scheme, and fight to carve out their place in the New World. A smart, sexy, and radical re-framing of our country’s history from a female and First Nations perspective.
“Deceitful Above All Things” immerses us in blood and lust via the tumultuous arrival in New France of two young women: one pursuing an illicit love affair with a priest, the other determined to escape the tyranny of childbearing. Both will challenge the conventions of their time and forge the most unlikely of friendships against a backdrop of simmering colonial tensions, and the violence of love itself.
In “Dark Heart”, we shift backwards in time to explore the backstories of the minor characters from “Deceitful Above All Things”, as they attempt to solve a supernatural mystery in this taut historical thriller. A young French bride disappears into the forest. Has she run off to be with her lover, or is there something more sinister in the woods? While rumours of a supernatural creature spread through the settlement, everyone seems to be hunting for the missing woman, including an Indigenous fur trapper, the local doctor, a newly-arrived French soldier & her jealous husband. But perhaps one of them is the beast that they fear.
"Dark Heart" was recorded on the traditional lands of the Anishinabe, the Attawandaron, the Chippawa, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, The Haudenosaunee, and the Huron-Wendat Confederacy. The story takes place on the traditional lands of the Kanien'kehaka, and the cast includes artists from many different backgrounds, including Métis and settler.
“Heartless” propels us twenty years into the future, and into the voice of the daughters of the original families. An examination of the power of story telling and community to heal the intergenerational trauma of colonization.
